Volunteers

Could you join the sozo women's resettlement project national Christian volunteer network to provide spiritual and pastoral support for women leaving prison?

Are you compassionate, caring, non-judgemental, practical, reliable, trustworthy, and a good listener?

Are you able to identify problems and provide support in seeking solutions, help to raise self-esteem where necessary, help and support growth in faith, foster and/or help to sustain a resistance to re-offending and respect confidentiality?

You will need a good relevant local knowledge and details of local agencies, access to a computer, e-mail and telephone, have a good understanding of the Christian faith, and to be willing to provide regular updates of individual progress to project directors.

  Training & Support

initial training – one-day seminar
a support pack of background information including prison details, links to web sites and other computer resources, counsellors and useful contacts
constant support link to directors of The Sozo Project
when a woman is linked to a volunteer, a profile of the released ex-offender (prepared in consultation with the woman herself) will be available, together with other relevant details
as much notice as possible of impending release – usually months but certainly weeks ahead
prayer centres which are based in Gloucestershire, Midlands and Surrey

I
f you join the team, this ministry will not be constantly demanding. Commitment when a link is forged will depend on various factors e.g. if the woman has a family or friends already in the area, what her needs are, initially and longer term and, not least of all, her progress, confidence and stability in the community itself. You will offer regular support, encouragement to re-shape lives and a listening ear. We need volunteers everywhere. This is an important Christian ministry – God’s forgiveness changes people’s lives in many ways.

Prayer Centres
A growing number of Prayer Centres are being established around the UK to support the work of The Sozo Women's Resettlement Project. A Prayer Centre is typically a pastoral care group or healing ministry team within a church, or a group of Christians meeting together regularly for prayer in a particular place. If you would like to set up a Prayer Centre for us in your area please let us know.
